Why Your Washing Machine Won't Drain
When a washing machine finishes a cycle full of water, or stops with a drain error code, it means the water cannot leave the drum. The drain system is simple — filter, pump and hose — so the problem is usually in one of these three places.
- A blocked pump filter (coins, hair clips, lint and tissue are common culprits)
- A kinked, crushed or blocked drain hose
- A blocked sink trap or standpipe the hose drains into
- A failed or jammed drain pump
- A faulty pressure switch or control board that doesn't trigger draining
Safe Checks You Can Do First
Before calling a technician, switch the machine off and unplug it. Then try these simple checks:
- Check the drain hose behind the machine for kinks or anything pressing on it.
- If the hose drains into a sink, make sure the sink trap is not blocked.
- Locate the pump filter (usually behind a small panel at the bottom front). Place towels and a shallow tray underneath — water will come out.
- Slowly unscrew the filter, remove any debris, rinse it and screw it back firmly.
- Run a rinse and spin cycle to test.
Never force the door open while there is water inside, and never tip the machine forward on its own.
Drain Error Codes by Brand
Most modern machines display a code when they cannot drain. Common examples include:
- Samsung: 5C or 5E
- LG: OE
- Bosch and Siemens: E18
- Electrolux, AEG and Zanussi: E20
