Common Causes of Ice Build-Up
- Door left slightly open or a worn door seal letting in humid air
- Defrost heater, sensor or timer failure on frost-free models
- Blocked defrost drain causing water to refreeze
- Hot food placed directly in the freezer
- Frequent door opening in humid weather
How to Defrost Safely
- Empty the freezer and store food in a cool box.
- Switch off and unplug the fridge.
- Leave the doors open with towels on the floor to catch water.
- Never use knives or sharp tools to chip ice — you can puncture the gas pipes.
- Wipe everything dry, then switch back on and wait for it to cool before refilling.
When Defrosting Doesn't Solve It
If ice returns within days, the defrost system has likely failed. On No Frost fridges ice should never build up — if it does, a part needs replacing. Our technicians test the defrost heater, sensor, timer and control board and fix the fault.
Prevent Frost in the Future
- Check door seals regularly — a paper test helps: close the door on a sheet of paper; it should feel resistance when pulled.
- Let hot food cool before freezing.
- Keep the defrost drain clear.
